Your thermostat says seventy and you're still cold, so you turn it up. That's not warming your house, it's just raising your gas bill. Most of the time the furnace is fine. The heat is leaking out, blowing past you, or the thermostat is reading the wrong spot. Here are five things to fix, most of them free, and the one that fools almost everybody. I've kept the same old Ohio house warm through forty winters. 0:00 Still cold at seventy? 1:30 The neighbor with the brand new furnace 3:00 1. Cold glass and cold walls 4:35 2. The draft you can't see 6:07 3. Air blowing on you 7:32 Where we are 8:20 4. Dry air 10:00 5. The thermostat in the wrong spot 11:24 Where you call somebody 12:15 What it all costs 13:32 Next time: the old seventies habits that cut my gas bill in half What does your thermostat say compared to a thermometer next to your chair? Tell me in the comments. Turn off the breaker before you take an outlet cover off. If your carbon monoxide alarm ever goes off, get everyone out of the house and call the gas company from outside.
