On Christmas eve 1944 the men of the 66th infantry division (one of the divisions that trained at Camp Blanding) were met with a tragedy. One of the unit's transport ships the SS Leopoldville was torpedoed on its way to Cherbourg, France. The men aboard were being sent as reinforcements for the ongoing Battle of The Bulge when the ship sank. By the end of the night, 763 men had lost their lives. The Camp Blanding Museum still holds a memorial ceremony for these men to this day.
