Complexity is the enemy of trust. Yet too many leaders unintentionally make it harder for people to understand them - and that can quickly undermine their credibility. In this video, Dr Neryl East unpacks three communication problems she’s noticing: • Leaders aren’t clear on their own message. If a leader doesn’t know exactly what they want people to understand, it’s almost impossible to communicate with confidence. • They overcomplicate their language. Stodgy corporate language, jargon and unnecessary complexity don’t make leaders sound smarter. They make the message harder to understand. • They forget the context. When people receive information without understanding the bigger picture or why it matters, they can feel confused or completely blindsided. Clear communication isn’t about dumbing down a message. It’s about doing the thinking first, stripping away the clutter and helping people understand what matters. When people understand their leaders, they’re far more likely to trust them.
