A World War I Trench Lighter — Restoring a Piece of History
Dating back to around 1916, this trench lighter once belonged to a soldier who, judging by the crossed cannons emblem, may have served in an artillery unit.
It was discovered by metal detectorists on the battlefields of the Brusilov Offensive in what is now western Ukraine.
The Brusilov Offensive was a major Russian military operation during World War I, launched in June 1916 against Austro-Hungarian and German forces. It became one of the largest and bloodiest offensives of the war, resulting in over two million military casualties on both sides, including those killed, wounded, and captured.
Even today, many military relics from this period are still being discovered in these fields. This is not the first lighter from these battlefields to come into my hands. I know several metal detectorists who continue searching these historic sites.
Thanks to the favorable sandy soil, the brass body of this lighter survived remarkably well. However, after its discovery, it remained in a collector's possession for several more years before reaching my workshop.
Although the lighter shows signs of corrosion, most of its original components have survived. Unfortunately, the section containing the flint wheel had completely corroded away.
Using my restoration skills, I brought this historic piece back to life.
My goal was never to make it look brand new. I wanted to preserve its character, traces of age, and as many original details as possible. Every mark tells a story, and I believe these traces of time are part of what makes an artifact like this special.
Now, this little piece of history is ready to find a new home with someone who truly appreciates World War I relics and rare historical artifacts.
