I Knew the Sultan — The Sons of Nobody
A historical dream told by an unnamed guard standing outside the final door of a fading empire.
“I Knew the Sultan” blends electro-acoustic art rock with nocturnal Middle Eastern colour: oud-like strings, distant atmospheric guitars, restrained percussion, warm bass and subtle analogue textures surrounding a deep, intimate male baritone.
The song moves between the Bosphorus, the palace and the strange afterlife of history—where borders change, identities become uncertain and family stories survive long after empires disappear. At its centre is a Nobody with a rifle and a frown, trusted by the Sultan as revolution approaches the shore.
Part historical ballad, part inherited memory and part ghost story, the song asks what remains when official history has forgotten everyone who stood quietly at its doors.
“I knew the Sultan
I stood outside his door
He had a crown behind him
And a revolution at the shore.”
Written and performed by The Sons of Nobody.
