Does video length actually affect how many views you get on YouTube? Does YouTube push longer videos, or is the idea that “longer videos = more views” just a myth?
In this video, we break down the truth about YouTube video length, how the recommendation system looks at viewer behavior, and whether making your videos longer can actually help you get more views.

04:36 So, Does Video Length Get More Views?
I’ve personally seen both sides of this. On an old channel, I went from making videos around 10 minutes long to making them closer to 20 minutes — and one of those longer videos suddenly blew up. At first, it looked like proof that YouTube preferred longer videos.
But then I looked at my current channel, where some of my best-performing videos were only around 5 minutes long, while some 7–8 minute videos also performed extremely well.
So what actually matters?
In this video, we look at video length, audience retention, watch time, relative watch time, absolute watch time, viewer satisfaction, recommendations, and the famous 8-minute mark to figure out whether longer YouTube videos really have an advantage.
You’ll learn:
• Whether YouTube actually prefers longer videos
• Whether making a video 8+ minutes can help it get recommended
• Why watch time and audience retention matter more than simply making a video longer
• The difference between absolute watch time and relative watch time
• Why a 3-minute video can outperform a 10-minute video
• Why adding filler to reach a certain length can actually hurt your video
• What your retention graph can tell you about video length
• Whether the 8-minute mid-roll ad threshold has anything to do with YouTube recommendations
• Why copying another creator’s video length usually doesn’t work
• How to choose the right length for your own YouTube videos
One important distinction: monetized videos that are 8 minutes or longer can use mid-roll ads, which creates additional opportunities for monetization. But that does not mean YouTube automatically recommends longer videos more. YouTube says recommendations focus on what viewers are likely to watch and enjoy, regardless of whether a video is monetized.
YouTube also says its systems use both absolute and relative watch time as engagement signals and recommends making videos an appropriate length for the content rather than chasing a universal number.
So instead of asking:
“What is the perfect YouTube video length?”
The better question is:
“How long can I keep this interesting?”
If your idea needs 3 minutes, make it 3 minutes.
If it needs 8 minutes, make it 8.
If it genuinely deserves 20 minutes, make it 20.
The goal isn't to make your videos longer or shorter.
The goal is to make every minute worth watching.
YouTube itself describes its recommendation system as being driven by what viewers watch and enjoy, with the broader goal of maximizing long-term viewer satisfaction.
