Charles Ng’s death sentence was upheld by the California Supreme Court in July two thousand twenty-two, and no execution date exists because California has not carried out an execution since two thousand six. Reports in October two thousand twenty-six say Governor Gavin Newsom is weighing whether to commute the state’s death sentences before leaving office in January. Erik and Lyle Menendez were resentenced to fifty years to life in May two thousand twenty-five, were denied parole that August, and have new hearings tentatively set for March two thousand twenty-seven. Pamela Smart’s petition for a new trial was dismissed in September two thousand twenty-six. Diane Downs maintains that a stranger shot her children and cannot ask for another parole hearing until two thousand thirty-one.
