Most jazz drummers know Art Blakey as one of the defining voices of hard bop. Few recordings demonstrate his approach more clearly than "Moanin'", one of the most iconic performances in the history of the Jazz Messengers.
In this video, I'm performing my newly revised and expanded drum transcription of the first 69 bars of "Moanin'", composed by Bobby Timmons and recorded by Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers on October 30, 1958. My original transcription covered the first 36 bars; this new version nearly doubles that scope while also revisiting details throughout the original section. Listening to the recording again with fresh ears, new audio tools and several more years of transcription experience revealed details that I interpreted differently than I had in my original version.
The result is this completely revised transcription and a new performance based exclusively on the original 1958 studio recording.
For me, this process also illustrates something fundamental about transcribing jazz drums: a transcription is never simply a collection of objectively identifiable notes. Especially on historical recordings, sound, frequency overlap, dynamics, articulation and the interaction between the musicians can make individual details difficult to identify with absolute certainty. Returning to the same recording years later can therefore lead to a different—and hopefully deeper—understanding of what is happening.
Art Blakey's playing on "Moanin'" is inseparable from the character of the composition. His famous shuffle feel, his backbeat and subtle ghost notes create an internal momentum that became one of the defining sounds of hard bop. Blakey does not simply play a continuous snare drum shuffle. Instead, the placement and dynamics of the quieter notes interact with the backbeat and create the characteristic forward motion of the groove. What looks relatively simple on paper becomes much more complex once touch, dynamics and phrasing enter the equation.
This revised transcription is closely connected to my ongoing article series The Art of Transcribing Jazz Drums for Modern Drummer. For the October 2026 issue, I take a closer look at two very different interpretations of "Moanin'" — Art Blakey's original recording and Jimmy Cobb's later version with Bobby Timmons — and explore what these performances can teach us about transcription, interpretation and the individual voice of a jazz drummer.
The comparison is particularly interesting because both drummers are playing the same composition, yet arrive at very different solutions.

Listening to these two recordings side by side is a great reminder that there is never just one way to accompany a jazz standard. The composition may remain the same, but touch, sound, vocabulary, dynamics and interaction can completely change its character.
As with all historical recordings, a drum transcription is always also an interpretation. The goal is not to claim absolute certainty for every note, but rather to better understand the musical ideas, rhythmic concepts and artistic decisions behind a great performance.
