Three out of four said stay. The other one is not going anywhere either.
On October 19, Albertans answered ten referendum questions, and the one everyone watched was not even a straight yes or no on independence. Question 10 asked whether the province should start the legal process toward a future, binding separation vote. Unofficial counts have roughly 75 per cent choosing to remain. Premier Danielle Smith says she will not hold another separation referendum while she is premier. Prime Minister Mark Carney says Albertans chose Canada. Some polls ran out of ballots, and results came in late into the night.
Anjo and Filbert look past the headline number. Why a citizen petition put separation on the ballot in the first place. How a province can actually leave, under the Supreme Court's 1998 Secession Reference and the Clarity Act. Why First Nations say their treaties were signed with the Crown, not with Alberta. And the questions most people skipped: more provincial control over immigration, limits on services for temporary residents, and proof of citizenship to vote, which all passed.
Then there is Quebec. It lost in 1980 and again in 1995, and still came away with more say over immigration and a regional veto. Separation lost in Alberta this week. The demand for more control may have quietly won.
Is separatism finished, or just waiting for the next grievance? What should Ottawa change before it comes back? Leave it in the comments.
