Red grape varietals that grow in this region include Mandó, Sumoll, Picapoll Negre, Garnatxa Negra, Ull de llebre, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah. White grape varietals include Macabeu / Viura, Parellada, Picapoll Blanc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürtztraminer, and Malvasía. We visited Pere Ventura Cava and Can Bas for Cava and wine tastings. This trip is a must see, must do while in Barcelona, Spain. The Penedès wine region lies in Catalonia, between Barcelona and Tarragona, stretching from the Mediterranean coast up toward the foothills of Montserrat. It is best known as the heartland of Cava, Spain’s traditional-method sparkling wine, with Sant Sadurní d’Anoia serving as its historic center. The region’s varied geography—coastal plains, rolling hills, and higher inland elevations—creates diverse microclimates that support a wide range of grapes, from indigenous Xarel·lo, Macabeu, and Parellada to international varieties like Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Penedès is also a leader in organic and biodynamic winemaking, reflecting a strong commitment to sustainability.
