Sometimes, the greatest challenge isn't learning how to hold on, but learning how to let go. In this episode of American Samurai, we explore the fascinating world of the traditional Japanese bow, the Yumi, and the ancient martial art of Kyudo, where archery becomes something far more than simply hitting a target. I've always been fascinated by the unusual asymmetrical shape of the Japanese bow, its extraordinary size, and the grace and discipline involved in using it. But what interests me most is the philosophy behind the practice: the idea that, through years of training, the archer must learn to release the arrow without consciously deciding to release it. And as anyone who has studied Zen knows, that's considerably harder than it sounds. We also examine a remarkable antique Japanese arrow quiver, several hundred years old, recently acquired from a family in Japan.
