For years, Indian-Americans and Indian nationals have ranked among the top foreign buyers of homes in the US. According to the National Association of Realtors (NAR), these buyers have paid the highest median prices compared to any other group of foreign buyers across the country. Consequently, the boom previously seen in the real estate markets of several major US cities appears to be slowing down—a trend directly linked to the announcements regarding H-1B visas. Before delving into that connection, let us look at the current state of the US real estate market. The NAR’s report, '2026 International Transactions in U.S. Residential Real Estate,' reveals that foreign buyers purchased existing US homes worth $45.3 billion between April 2025 and March 2026.
