Guitarist Tariq Harb performs the iconic 1st movement of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata", officially titled "Piano Sonata No. 14, Op. 27, No. 2", and marked "Quasi una fantasia".
The sonata was completed in 1801 and dedicated in 1802 to his pupil Countess Giulietta Guicciardi. Although known throughout the world as the Moonlight Sonata (German: Mondscheinsonate), it was not Beethoven who named it so. The title "Moonlight Sonata" was proposed in 1832, after the composer’s death, by the poet Ludwig Rellstab.
The piece is one of Beethoven's most famous compositions for the piano, and was quite popular even in his own day. Beethoven wrote the Moonlight Sonata around the age of 30, after he had finished with some commissioned work; there is no evidence that he was commissioned to write this sonata.
This edition presents an adaptation of the first movement of the “Moonlight Sonata”, arranged for solo classical guitar.
Over an extended period, I have carefully edited, reworked, and re-fingered an existing arrangement by Robert Tarchara, with the aim of achieving a result that remains more faithful to the spirit and texture of Beethoven’s original piano score. With Mr. Tarchara’s kind permission, I am pleased to share these revisions as a newly realized arrangement, now available through my online store: https://tariqharb.com/product/beethov...
The score has been engraved entirely from scratch and includes my detailed fingerings and editorial decisions, allowing guitarists to closely reproduce the interpretation heard in the video. This repertoire is a true pleasure to explore on the classical guitar, and I sincerely hope you find as much enjoyment in playing it as I had in preparing it.
