We went to Lourdes, explored its famous sanctuary, filled our bottles with holy water and prepared to take a little piece of the pilgrimage home. Unfortunately, airport security had other ideas. Our precious cargo never made it onto the plane.
📜 Description
🇬🇧 English
This film documents our visit to Lourdes, France, one of the world's most famous Catholic pilgrimage destinations, beautifully situated at the foot of the French Pyrenees. Lourdes is a fascinating place even for visitors who do not come as pilgrims. Its lively streets, hotels, cafés, religious shops and spectacular mountain surroundings create an unusual atmosphere, where a bustling tourist town meets one of Christianity's most important centres of pilgrimage.
Our walk takes us through the town and into the magnificent Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, dominated by the striking Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, the Rosary Basilica with its beautiful mosaics, and the enormous underground Basilica of St Pius X. We explore the surroundings of the famous Grotto of Massabielle, where the fourteen-year-old Bernadette Soubirous reported seeing the Virgin Mary in 1858. The grotto remains the spiritual heart of Lourdes.
But before we finish, a complaint must be made.
Like countless visitors before us, we collected water from the spring associated with Our Lady of Lourdes. We had brought plenty of bottles, filled them carefully and looked forward to taking them home.
Unfortunately, every single bottle was confiscated at the airport.
Our little collection of Lourdes water ended its journey at security.
The moment that water enters an airport, it becomes subject to the same aviation security restrictions as ordinary drinking water, shampoo or perfume.
The problem is not specific to Lourdes. For years, European passengers have complained about having bottles of water and other harmless liquids confiscated at security checkpoints. The familiar 100 ml rule has become one of the most controversial everyday inconveniences of air travel.
Of course, airport security officers are enforcing rules rather than making individual judgments about the spiritual significance of a bottle's contents. And holy water is not exempt from the laws of chemistry or aviation security.
Our film therefore records a rather unusual souvenir of Lourdes: the story of the holy water we collected but were not allowed to bring home.
We do not doubt the importance of aviation security. But it is difficult not to feel a little sympathy for pilgrims who carefully fill their bottles at the sanctuary, only to discover that their treasured water cannot travel in their hand luggage.
Perhaps the moral is simple: when visiting Lourdes, check the airport's liquid restrictions before filling your bottles—or, better still, put properly sealed bottles into checked baggage where permitted.
The holy water stayed in France.
