Labyrinth Ensemble with Evgenios Voulgaris (Part 1)

April 15, 2023 at the Aga Khan Museum. Labyrinth Ensemble, led by guest artist Evgenios Voulgaris from Patras, Greece, presents music from Dimitrie Cantemir and Ali Ufki's collection, as well as contemporary makam music compositions of Voulgaris himself. As he says, we use old materials in a contemporary context. Makam, sometimes referred to as a mode, is a collection of pitch material with specific intervals that create a unique flavour distinguishing each makam. The two makams presented in this performance have significant emotional merits for Voulgaris. For him, the nihavend part represents the feeling of missing, and the ussak part represents the feeling of desire.
