Discover Uncover Episode 1: The Beecher Tornado of 1953

Listen in as Geoff Woodcox, Sloan Museum curator of Collections, and Jerome Threlkeld, Community Engagement Coordinator, discuss the catastrophic EF5 tornado that destroyed entire neighborhoods in the Flint Beecher community in 1953. It was the deadliest recorded tornado in the United States up until 2011 when the Joplin, Missouri, tornado hit. Letters from high school students' accounts of the storm are read aloud, as well as how the community came together to heal and re-build.
