IMAGINE SI TOUS LES IMMIGRÉS RENTRAIENT CHEZ EUX — HELENA CROSS What if everyone who came from somewhere else simply went home? I wrote Imagine si tous les immigrés rentraient chez eux as a soft activism song - not to tell people what to think, but to ask a question. Across Britain and Europe, conversations about immigration can become dominated by numbers, borders, pressure and fear. But behind those conversations are human beings: people who leave familiar places, build new lives, work, raise families, care for others, study, create businesses and become part of the communities around them. So I wanted to turn the question around. If all the people who came from somewhere else suddenly left, what would remain? Who would be missing from our hospitals, schools, farms, construction sites, care services, shops, transport networks and neighbourhoods? And perhaps the deeper question is not only: “Why are they here?” but also: “Who are they to us?” This song is not saying that every migrant has the same circumstances, makes the same contribution, or that immigration raises no legitimate questions. Those conversations matter. But people should not become stereotypes simply because of where they were born, the colour of their skin, the language they speak or the accent they carry. I wanted to ask us to look closer than the label. The English/French version explores Britain and the wider European experience. The full French version takes the question further, imagining Britain, France, Italy, Germany - and ultimately any country where people have made a home far from where their journey began. Different journeys. Different colours. Different names. One humanity. This is my question. Imagine if they all went home.
