A fire starts in an apartment on an upper floor. How do we make sure every person has enough time, and enough ways out? That question is the idea behind the means of egress. This video starts with the fire, then the people, and then the exits that are designed around both. In this video: What a fire needs: the fire triangle (fuel, oxygen, heat) and the fire tetrahedron How fast a fire grows: slow, medium, fast and ultrafast fires, and what flashover is How people behave in a fire: the time before anyone moves, why panic is rare, and why people head for the exit they know What decides the time to walk out: people sharing the route, travel distance, and how easily each person moves What the means of egress is built on: getting people out in time. Count the people for the largest crowd, give enough capacity, more than one way out, and make the way out easy to find The MEP Automate Occupancy Calculator: occupant load from the code's table, required egress width for stairs and level routes, minimum number of means of egress, the point where routes from above and below meet, capacity never decreased on the way out, triggered requirements, and Word and Excel exports References (on screen): NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, 2024 Edition: # 4.1.1, A.4.1.1(1), # 4.2.1, # 4.5.1, # 4.5.3.1, # 4.5.3.3, # 4.5.4, A.4.5.4, # 7.3.1.1.1, # 7.3.1.1.2, # 7.3.1.4, # 7.3.1.5, A.7.3.1.2 NFPA Fire Protection Handbook, 21st Edition (2023), Volume 1: Figure 2.3.3 (fire tetrahedron); Figures 2.4.9 and 2.4.10 and the flashover definition; Figures 3.5.2 and 3.5.3 (t-squared fire growth); Table 3.7.3 (growth constants); Section 4, Chapter 1 (human behavior in fire) Requirements differ by country and project.
