Samarkand walking tour Uzbekistan through the city that served as the imperial capital of Timur's vast 14th century empire and was once the most magnificent city on earth. Registan Square's three madrassahs face each other across the most impressive public space in Central Asia, the turquoise domes of Bibi-Khanym catch the light above the old bazaar streets, and Shah-i-Zinda's necropolis lines a narrow lane with some of the finest tilework anywhere in the Islamic world.
This is a city that was already ancient when it became famous founded in the 7th century BC, conquered by Alexander the Great, destroyed by Genghis Khan, and rebuilt by Timur into something that stunned every traveller who saw it. The bones of that ambition are still standing. Walking Samarkand is walking through the physical evidence of what a city looked like when it was the centre of the known world.
Samarkand (Самарқанд) is Uzbekistan's second largest city with a population of around 600,000 people, situated in the Zerafshan River valley. Founded in the 7th century BC, it served as the imperial capital of Timur's empire in the 14th century and was rebuilt as one of the Islamic world's great centres of art, science and architecture. The city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. Uzbekistan is a doubly landlocked nation of 36 million people in the heart of Central Asia.
