Foster / Johnston / Phillips: a trio

Scott Foster, guitar Darren Johnston, trumpet David Phillips, pedal steel guitar September 18, 2026 Bird & Beckett Books San Francisco Bird & Beckett opened for business in San Francisco's Glen Park neighborhood in May 1999 and has been presenting live events, mostly jazz and poetry, ever since -- now as many of four to six shows every week, year round. The poets featured in our first Thursdays series are paid a small honorarium augmented by a tip jar; the musicians are almost all working professionals paid a guaranteed fair wage, funded by cover charges paid by those attending in person augmented by donations from individuals like you, watching on YouTube and other platforms and donating through PayPal and Venmo. Thank you for your support! Book buying patrons pay our rent and bookstore staff. It's a fine, independent shop with a vital, ever evolving and expanding inventory. Please visit us when you're in San Francisco! We're easy to find, within a block or two of multiple transit stops in a charming neighborhood at the foot of Twin Peaks and the expansive natural area called Glen Canyon, replete with hawks, owls, coyotes, nature lovers, hikers, dog walkers and children. The operating expenses of around $8,000 per month to produce, livestream and archive our concerts are almost entirely dependent on donations from people like you to the Bird & Beckett Cultural Legacy Project, a nonprofit organization, although we do pursue, and occasionally receive, small grants as well. We put your support to good use in a world that struggles to keep an unpredictable human element alive in our daily interactions, ever hemmed in as they are by corporate strategies overwhelmingly concerned with profit and social control. At Bird & Beckett, individuals think, interact, express themselves and collaborate with great creativity, talent, skill and goodwill in a community of shared hopes and aspirations. We're always learning and reminding ourselves how to stay human here. Thanks for being part of that effort. Please visit https://www.birdbeckett.com to learn more about the bookshop and our cultural offerings, and consider donating to help keep this operation ticking. It just takes a little bit from a lot of folks to allow this to continue. We've made it past the quarter century mark and have no intention of stopping!
