The incredible history of 41312 before she goes to overhaul in January
1. British Railways Service (1952–1967)
Construction: Built in May 1952 at the famous Crewe Works.
Southern Region Career: Unlike many of her classmates, 41312 spent her entire working career allocated exclusively to the Southern Region.
Shed Allocations & Routes:
She was first based at Faversham, moving to Ashford in June 1959.
She transferred to Barnstaple Junction, working services over the Torrington branch and appearing on lines to Ilfracombe and Exeter.
In March 1963, she moved to Brighton, and by 1964, she relocated to Bournemouth, where she worked the Swanage and Lymington branches
In April 1967, 41312 performed the very last steam-hauled service on the Lymington branch. She spent her final three months acting as a station shunter at Nine Elms for London Waterloo before being officially withdrawn on July 3, 1967, marking the end of Southern steam. In January 1968, she was sold to the famous Woodham Brothers scrapyard in Barry, Wales. She became the 63rd locomotive to successfully leave the yard when she was rescued by the Caerphilly Railway Society in 1974.
Move to Hampshire: In 1995, she was acquired by John Jones and moved to the Watercress Line (Mid Hants Railway). At the time, she was in a dreadful, heavily degraded condition, even having a tree growing out of her frames.
First Restoration: Following a massive volunteer effort at the Ropley workshops, she moved under her own power for the first time in 31 years on Christmas 1998. Mainline Certification: After returning to service in 1999, she was registered as TOPS Class 98 (No. 98212) and certified for mainline operations, allowing her to revisit her old Southern Region stomping grounds.
Second Overhaul (2016): After her first boilerplate ticket expired, she underwent another extensive overhaul at the Mid Hants Railway, returning to traffic in Spring 2016 (without mainline certification).
Change of Ownership: In June 2019, the Mid Hants Railway (MHR Limited) officially purchased the locomotive to permanently secure her as a part of their home fleet.
The Final Gala: In October 2026, she made her final major public appearances at the Watercress Line's Autumn Steam Gala. This event served as a historic send-off, paired alongside her visiting Isle of Wight-based sister locomotive, No. 41313, just before 41312's 10-year boiler certificate expired
