HMP Styal | Behind the Walls of Britain’s Forgotten Women | Street Crime UK

HMP Styal is a women’s prison located near Wilmslow in Cheshire, housing around 500 female inmates, including remand prisoners and those serving a range of sentences. Opened in 1962 on the site of a former Borstal, Styal focuses on rehabilitation, education, and providing support to women offenders, many of whom face complex challenges such as mental health issues and histories of abuse. Despite these aims, HMP Styal struggles with overcrowding, self-harm incidents, and limited resources — problems common in women’s prisons across the UK. The prison offers programs designed to prepare women for release, including vocational training, counselling, and mother-and-baby units, but ongoing safety concerns and staffing shortages continue to impact daily life. In this video, Street Crime UK gives an honest look at HMP Styal, exploring the realities women face behind the walls. We examine the prison’s efforts to rehabilitate while highlighting the difficulties posed by overcrowding and mental health crises. This is a raw, unfiltered insight into a prison trying to support vulnerable women while managing the pressures of the system.
