Nashville's Buried Secret: The Black Music Scene Country History Forgot (1945-1970)

Nashville's Buried Secret: The Black Music Scene Country History Forgot (1945-1970) Roots & Rhinestones explores Nashville’s overlooked R&B history — and the Black musicians who helped shape the sound of Music City. This is the part of the “history of country music” story that keeps getting left out of the intro. In this video: Jefferson Street’s vibrant music scene, the session musicians who crossed between R&B and country, the construction of Interstate 40 that devastated a Black musical community, and how Nashville’s official history pushed that community out of the spotlight. We explore the efforts to recover these stories — and why understanding country music means remembering everyone who helped build its sound. ⏱️Timestamps: 0:00 Nashville’s Forgotten R&B History 0:25 Music City Before the Mythology 1:09 Jefferson Street’s Thriving Music Scene 1:54 Shared Studios and the Nashville Sound 2:54 How Interstate 40 Divided a Music Community 3:46 Country Music Writes Its Official History 4:28 The Black Musical Influences Behind the Sound 5:36 Rediscovering Jefferson Street’s History 6:27 Why the Missing History Still Matters 7:09 The Musical Roots of Modern Nashville 7:57 Telling the Fuller Story 8:33 Closing and Subscribe New to our channel?
