Today I take you on a motorbike ride through a traditional Cambodian village on the outskirts of Siem Reap, where life is very different from the tourist areas of Cambodia. The roads are muddy, the houses are basic, and flooding is part of everyday life. Many families live in challenging conditions, with water surrounding their homes and very few of the comforts we take for granted in the West. But what really strikes me is the happiness and friendliness of the people. Children playing, smiling faces, chickens and dogs wandering around, and a wonderful sense of community. It raises an interesting question: does having more money and material possessions really make us happier? As an English expat living in Siem Reap, I'm continuing to explore the real Cambodia, beyond Angkor Wat and the tourist attractions, sharing everyday life, local culture and the incredible people who make this country so special.
