The first container crane went to work in Alameda, California, in 1959. Today, nearly 80% of the ship-to-shore cranes at US ports come from one Chinese state-owned company, founded in 1992 by a 59-year-old engineer on the verge of retirement. And in 2025, even the inventor's new cranes for Long Beach were set to be built in Japan.
