West Virginia reached its highest population in 1950, with just over two million people. By 2020, it had about 1.79 million. In Tucker County, the census counted 18,675 people in 1910 and 6,762 in 2020, the lowest number since 1890. This video counts down ten West Virginia places that boomed fast on coal, lumber and railroads, then emptied out almost as fast. Some still have a mayor. Some have a few dozen neighbors. Some have nothing left but foundations and wind. We go town by town, with the real census numbers, the old maps and the story of what built each place and what ended it.
