JAMB/WAEC Physics EP 26 – Friction + Likely Exam Questions & Solutions Welcome to O3Schools Physics Tutorials. In this lesson, we study Friction, one of the most important topics in Mechanics and a frequently tested area in JAMB, WAEC, NECO, and Post-UTME Physics examinations. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN • Meaning of Friction • Causes of Friction • Types of Friction • Advantages of Friction • Disadvantages of Friction • Methods of Reducing Friction • Likely Exam Questions WHAT IS FRICTION? Friction is the force that opposes the relative motion or tendency of motion between two surfaces in contact. Friction always acts opposite to the direction of motion. Examples: • Walking on the ground • Braking a vehicle • Writing on paper CAUSES OF FRICTION Friction occurs because: • Surfaces are not perfectly smooth. • Surface irregularities interlock. • Molecular attraction exists between surfaces. TYPES OF FRICTION 1. Static Friction Static friction acts between surfaces at rest and prevents motion from starting. Example: Pushing a heavy box that does not move immediately. 2. Sliding Friction Sliding friction acts when one surface slides over another. Example: Dragging a table across the floor. 3. Rolling Friction Rolling friction occurs when an object rolls over a surface. Example: Movement of vehicle tyres. Rolling friction is usually smaller than sliding friction. 4. Fluid Friction Fluid friction occurs when an object moves through liquids or gases. Example: Air resistance acting on a moving car. ADVANTAGES OF FRICTION • Enables walking without slipping. • Allows vehicles to move. • Helps brakes stop vehicles. • Makes writing possible. • Helps nails and screws hold objects together. DISADVANTAGES OF FRICTION • Causes wear and tear of machine parts. • Produces unwanted heat. • Reduces machine efficiency. • Increases fuel consumption. METHODS OF REDUCING FRICTION • Lubrication with oil or grease. • Polishing surfaces. • Using ball bearings. • Using wheels and rollers. • Streamlining vehicles and aircraft. APPLICATIONS OF FRICTION • Vehicle braking systems. • Belt drives in machines. • Climbing ladders. • Holding objects firmly. PAST QUESTION A force that opposes motion between two surfaces in contact is called: A. Tension B. Friction C. Upthrust D. Pressure Answer: B Solution: Friction opposes motion between surfaces in contact. LIKELY EXAM QUESTIONS 1. Friction acts: A. In the direction of motion B. Opposite to the direction of motion C. Upward only D. Downward only Answer: B 2. Which type of friction acts between stationary surfaces? A. Rolling friction B. Sliding friction C. Static friction D. Fluid friction Answer: C 3. Which of the following reduces friction? A. Roughening surfaces B. Lubrication C. Increasing pressure D. Adding weight Answer: B 4. Rolling friction is generally: A. Greater than sliding friction B. Equal to sliding friction C. Less than sliding friction D. Infinite Answer: C 5. Air resistance is an example of: A. Static friction B. Sliding friction C. Rolling friction D. Fluid friction Answer: D PAST CALCULATION A body is pulled with a force of 50 N while friction opposes motion with 15 N. Calculate the resultant force. Solution Resultant Force = Applied Force - Frictional Force = 50 - 15 = 35 N Answer: 35 N COMMON JAMB AND WAEC EXAMINATION AREAS • Friction • Types of Friction • Static Friction • Rolling Friction • Fluid Friction • Advantages and Disadvantages of Friction • Friction Calculations WHO SHOULD WATCH? ✓ JAMB Candidates ✓ WAEC Candidates ✓ NECO Candidates ✓ GCE Candidates ✓ Post-UTME Candidates ✓ Science Students SEARCH KEYWORDS Friction, Types of Friction, Static Friction, Sliding Friction, Rolling Friction, Fluid Friction, Mechanics, Force and Motion, JAMB Physics Tutorial, WAEC Physics Tutorial, Physics Questions and Answers, O3Schools Physics Tutorials.
