In Thailand, "let's eat Mama" doesn't mean your mother. It means instant noodles — any brand. Mama's own website quotes an executive saying most Thais call every brand "Mama." But Mama wasn't first. Thai press says it was the fourth brand on the shelf. So how did a latecomer end up as the word for the whole category? This is a story, not investment advice. We don't say whether to buy or sell anything. Company figures are attributed to the company. ⏱ Chapters [00:00] "Let's eat Mama" [00:25] This year [00:43] The big picture: 4 billion servings [01:07] Fourth in line (1971–1973) [02:00] The soup of 1980 [02:55] The name [03:24] A price that didn't move: 6 baht → 7 [03:48] The packet that's never finished [04:14] The lesson: the IKEA effect, and one egg [06:07] Your turn Key sources (full list with confidence notes in our research file) • Thai President Foods — company timeline (founded Feb 15, 1972; first product 1973): https://www.mama.co.th/th/%E0%B8%84%E... • Thai President Foods — history before the 2017 merger (Taiwanese partner; shares passed to Thai holders): https://www.mama.co.th/en/about-backg... • Thai President Foods — product page quoting an executive on "generic name" (2021): https://www.mama.co.th/th/products-do... • Thai President Foods — news (2026): https://www.mama.co.th/en/news-inner • World Instant Noodles Association — 2024 global demand release (May 7, 2025), via Kyodo PR Wire: https://kyodonewsprwire.jp/release/20... • Sanook — "Thailand's first instant noodle brand" (Aug 5, 2026): https://www.sanook.com/news/9902234/ • aomMONEY — "Mama: from No. 4 to market leader" (May 27, 2024): https://aommoney.com/mama-instant-noo... • Bangkok Biznews — "6 things you may not know about Mama" (2022): https://www.bangkokbiznews.com/busine... • BrandAge — Mama Tom Yum Goong case study (Feb 26, 2022): https://www.brandage.com/article/29620 • Brand Inside — Yum Yum's tom yum relaunch (Nov 28, 2018): https://brandinside.asia/?p=45832 • Marketeer — profile of the Paniangvait family (Sep 23, 2021): https://marketeeronline.co/archives/2... • AFP via The Malaysian Insight — "Thailand approves first instant noodle price rise in 14 years" (Aug 24, 2022): https://www.themalaysianinsight.com/s... • Thairath — instant noodle price request (Aug 23, 2022): https://www.thairath.co.th/money/econ... • The Nation — "Why Thai people say 'Eat Mama'" (Jul 10, 2025): https://www.nationthailand.com/life/a... • Taste — "There's No Noodle Like a Mama Noodle" (May 9, 2019): https://tastecooking.com/theres-no-no... • The Nation — "Farewell to a Mama pioneer" (Jul 9, 2026): https://www.nationthailand.com/news/g... • Norton, Mochon & Ariely (2012), "The IKEA Effect: When Labor Leads to Love," Journal of Consumer Psychology 22(3): https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jcps.2011.0... • Sarstedt, Neubert & Barth (2017), "The IKEA effect: A conceptual replication," Journal of Marketing Behavior: https://doi.org/10.1561/107.00000039 The psychology in this video is our own interpretation, not a proven fact about Mama's customers. The IKEA-effect experiments used about 300 people at American universities, bids measured in cents, and boxes, paper and Lego — not food — and came from the same authors; we found one conceptual replication and no large preregistered one, and no test on noodles. Several details here come from a single source or from the company itself, and we say so in the video: the early price comparison with street noodles, the silver pouch and "first in the world" claim, and the origin of the name.
