New excavations at Göbekli Tepe are revealing a side of this ancient site that could dramatically change how we picture the dawn of civilization. For decades, the famous archaeological site in southeastern Turkey was widely presented as a monumental ceremonial center, famous for its enormous T-shaped pillars, animal carvings, and mysterious stone enclosures. But newly opened land north of the main excavations has revealed something very different: rectangular buildings, rooms, floors, and possible domestic spaces.
The discovery suggests that people may have lived at Göbekli Tepe rather than simply visiting the site for seasonal ceremonies. Archaeologists are investigating whether these structures were homes and how they relate chronologically to the older oval enclosures. Water cisterns, channels, quarries, and additional buried structures add further evidence for a complex and organized community.
Ground-penetrating surveys have also identified another large hollow that could contain more monumental structures, meaning the excavation may be far from finished. Meanwhile, nearby sites are revealing that Göbekli Tepe may have belonged to a much larger network of ancient settlements across southeastern Turkey.
This video explores the hidden buildings, ancient settlement, archaeological evidence, and the emerging theory that Göbekli Tepe was not simply a temple—but a place people called home.
