Male pattern hair loss often starts with gradual hair thinning before visible baldness. But why do thick, healthy-looking hairs slowly become thinner, shorter and weaker? In this video, we explain the science behind male pattern hair loss, the role of DHT (dihydrotestosterone), genetic sensitivity and a process called hair follicle miniaturization.
If you've noticed a receding hairline, thinning at the crown or reduced hair density, you'll understand how DHT-sensitive hair follicles change over time, why the hair growth cycle becomes shorter, and why some men develop baldness faster than others.
We also discuss how to distinguish genetic hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) from other causes of hair fall, and whether treatments such as Minoxidil and Finasteride can help slow hair loss or improve existing thinning hair.

WHY DOES HAIR GET THINNER BEFORE BALDNESS?
In male pattern hair loss, the key process is follicular miniaturization.
1. Genetic Sensitivity to DHT – Some scalp hair follicles are genetically more sensitive to dihydrotestosterone, an androgen hormone derived from testosterone.
2. Hair Follicle Miniaturization – Over successive growth cycles, affected follicles gradually produce thinner, shorter and less visible hairs.
3. Changes in the Hair Growth Cycle – The hair growth phase can become shorter, reducing the length and thickness of the hair produced.
4. Gradual Loss of Hair Density – As more follicles become miniaturized, the scalp becomes increasingly visible, particularly around the hairline and crown.
5. Progression Varies Between Individuals – Not everyone has the same degree of DHT sensitivity, hair-loss pattern or speed of progression.
CAN THINNING HAIR BECOME THICKER AGAIN?
In some patients, early treatment can help slow male pattern hair loss and improve the growth of existing miniaturized hair.
Minoxidil – Can support hair growth and improve hair density in some patients.
Finasteride – Reduces DHT production and can help slow the progression of male pattern hair loss in appropriately selected male patients.
However, results depend on the underlying cause of hair loss, the condition of the follicles and individual treatment response. Visible improvements generally take several months, and complete restoration of previous hair density cannot be guaranteed.
IMPORTANT:
Not every type of hair thinning is male pattern hair loss.
Stress, illness, nutritional deficiencies, thyroid disorders, certain medications and scalp conditions can also contribute to hair fall.
Sudden excessive shedding, patchy hair loss, scalp itching or irritation should not automatically be attributed to DHT or genetic baldness.
Do not start Finasteride or other medical treatments without appropriate medical assessment. Treatment suitability, possible side effects and monitoring should be discussed with a dermatologist.
IS DHT CAUSING YOUR HAIR THINNING?
If your hairline is slowly receding, your crown is becoming thinner or your hair density is reducing, identifying the possible cause is more useful than randomly trying hair oils, supplements or medications.
The FYH Hair Assessment asks a few questions about your hair loss to help you understand possible contributing factors and what you should focus on next.
