Video 4 of 7. Fourth section of paddle from Dunbeath to Berriedale and back on 23 August 2026 along the Devonian cliffs. A very interesting sequence of cliffs of suspected Moine in origin with later granite intrusions, is sandwiched between Middle Old Red Sandstone to the north at Ceann Leathadg nam Bo, ND1344 2427 and to the south at Traigh Loisgte ND 1313 2379. Just at the south side of a narrow cliff sequence of breccia-conglomerate (possibly Lower Devonian) overlain by red sandstone (Middle Devonian), there is a sequence of beautiful ornate folding, ductile deformation creating a series of asymmetric folds, in the cliff at ND 1342 2423. There are 3 caves at the cliff base. Following on southwards to Traigh Loisgte ND 1313 2379, appears to be Moine rocks which have been intruded by granite veins during the Caledonian Orogeny, 417 to 420 million years ago, as the Iapetus Ocean closed.
