We begin in the Traveler’s Garden, one of Heronswood’s newer gardens, where plants collected from different parts of the world create a botanical journey without ever leaving the Pacific Northwest. We explore the Chilean section and talk about Heronswood’s plant collections from Chile, Vietnam, and the California–Oregon border region, including unusual and adventurous plants being established in this young garden. Then we enter what may be my favorite part of the entire garden—the Renaissance Garden. This lush, mysterious garden tells the story of nature reclaiming an abandoned human landscape. Rusting artifacts, old stumps, moss, fallen wood, towering trees, and an extraordinary collection of ferns combine to create a landscape that feels somewhere between a botanical garden, a woodland, and a forgotten fairy tale. The Renaissance Garden is especially renowned for its fern collection, and this tour takes us deep into that world. We discover unusual ferns, woodland plants, epimediums, terrestrial orchids, mosses, a charming fern table, and the garden’s atmospheric stumpery—a Pacific Northwest garden feature that uses decaying wood and tree stumps as both structure and habitat. We also stop to admire some truly unusual plants, including Mayanthemum, Paris, Woodwardia, giant-flowered plants, and other botanical treasures that make Heronswood such a special destination for plant lovers and garden designers. Along the way, we talk about one of the most fascinating questions in garden design: What happens when we stop trying to control nature and instead create a garden where nature appears to be taking everything back?
