The KHL Gave Him a Contract," we examine the controversial career of Slava Voynov, the Russian defenseman whose time in the NHL ended in disgrace before he found another opportunity overseas. Voynov helped the Los Angeles Kings win back to back Stanley Cups and looked like a defenseman who could remain a key part of the franchise for years. Then, in 2014, a case changed everything. He was suspended by the NHL, served jail time after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor charge, and was eventually deported to Russia. The NHL career was over, but Voynov's hockey career wasn't. He returned to professional hockey in Russia, eventually joining the KHL and later representing his country internationally. His return raised difficult questions about accountability, second chances, and how different leagues respond when a star player becomes embroiled in a serious controversy. The NHL moved on without him. Russian hockey opened another door.
