🇹🇭 Koh Mook Island | เกาะมุก | Trang

It’s the rainy season in Thailand, so I decided to head south towards Trang Province, with Koh Mook as my destination. After riding approximately 290 kilometres, I eventually reached the small village of Khuan Tung Ku, where I left the motorcycle at the pier and boarded a local transport and cargo boat to the island. There is no proper car ferry to Koh Mook, so the motorcycle had to stay behind in the rather capable hands of a local fellow who was paid to keep an eye on it while I was away. Technically, it is possible to transport a motorcycle across to the island, but Koh Mook is so small that there really isn’t much reason to bring a big adventure bike with you. A small scooter is more than enough to get around. Koh Mook, which translates as “Pearl Island,” is a charming and relatively little-known island in the Andaman Sea, just off the coast of Trang Province. Compared with many of Thailand’s more developed islands, Mook remains wonderfully peaceful and largely undeveloped, offering a much more authentic island experience. The island is small enough to explore easily, with essentially one main village and no cars. Instead, the roads are shared by small scooters, bicycles, and the occasional local vehicle. There are no big shopping centres, no large chain stores, and, thankfully, not a single 7-Eleven in sight. Life here moves at a wonderfully slow pace. Small fishing communities are home to members of the Chao Leh, or “Sea Gypsy,” communities, whose traditional way of life remains closely connected to the surrounding sea. I spent just 24 hours on Koh Mook, which was enough time to explore the island, experience its peaceful atmosphere, and get a little taste of this wonderfully laid-back corner of Thailand.
