CJP Goa Protest: Permission for Peaceful Gathering in Azad Maidan.? Is Free Speech Under Pressure?

On 11 October 2026, Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) Goa organised a protest at Azad Maidan, Panaji, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and raising concerns over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The North Goa District Magistrate rejected permission for the public assembly, citing a negative report from the Superintendent of Police (North). Despite this, people gathered. Police blocked entry to the maidan, detained several protesters (including CJP volunteers), and the demonstration shifted to the nearby Municipal Garden. In this ground report I interview speakers and young participants who came to the site. They talk about the denial of permission, the detentions, and their views on the right to peaceful protest.
