Today, synthesisers, computers and multitrack recording techniques give the composer amazing scope and freedom. In The New Sound of Music, Michael Rodd reveals some of the highlights of this extraordinary story of musical pioneering, and takes you into the magic world of White-Noise, Saw-Tooth, Square-Wave and Digital Sequencers. Part of the film focuses on how the BBC Radiophonic Workshop makes such contrasting music as the Dr Who signature tune and the much-praised background music for Jonathan Miller's The Body in Question. Radiophonic Workshop wizards Elizabeth Parker, Paddy Kingsland, Malcolm Clarke, Dick Mills, Roger Limb and Peter Howell demonstrate some of their techniques. The film also features musicians like Peter Zinovieff, David Vorhaus and Rick Wakeman, creating intriguingly bizarre, yet often highly melodious sounds using an amazing variety of novel instruments.
