The Christian's confidence is not founded upon personal strength, determination, religious achievement, or the absence of adversity. Our victory rests upon Christ, His finished work, and the eternal salvation found in Him. The foundation of this victory is the gospel declared in *1 Corinthians 15:3-4**: **"Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:"* Jesus Christ paid for our sins at Calvary, was buried, and bodily rose from the dead the third day. Salvation cannot be earned through good works, baptism, church membership, religious ceremonies, keeping commandments, personal righteousness, or human merit. Eternal salvation is received when a sinner places faith and trust in Jesus Christ and His finished work. The believer's security therefore rests upon Christ rather than upon his ability to maintain salvation through personal performance. *"Conquerors in Christ"* draws upon the powerful declaration of *Romans 8:37: "Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us."* Notice that Scripture does not say believers are conquerors because they possess unlimited strength within themselves. We are more than conquerors **through Him**. The surrounding passage speaks of tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, and sword. Biblical victory therefore does not mean Christians will never experience hardship. The believer can be surrounded by adversity and still possess a victory that circumstances cannot destroy. Christians will face spiritual battles. Temptation must be resisted, biblical truth must be defended, discouragement must be confronted, and faithfulness must be maintained when compromise appears easier. Yet believers do not enter these battles attempting to earn eternal life. They fight from the secure position already given to them in Jesus Christ. The greatest enemy facing mankind is death, and even death has been defeated through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The grave could not hold Him. Because Christ rose again, every saved believer possesses a certain hope beyond this present life. Death cannot separate the believer from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. There is coming a day when mortality shall put on immortality and death shall be swallowed up in victory. The Christian's final triumph is therefore not dependent upon temporary earthly circumstances. It rests upon the risen Christ and the promises of God's Word. *"Conquerors in Christ"* is a call to courage, endurance, faithfulness, and confidence in Jesus Christ. Christians may experience opposition without surrendering. They may encounter hardship without abandoning hope. They may experience weakness without giving up the fight. Through Christ, believers can continue standing faithfully upon biblical truth.
