The 7:01 sunrise comes up near 45°F (7°C) under the leftover clouds from last night's front, the sky breaks to partly sunny as the morning goes on and the high only manages around 49°F (9°C). The northwest wind is the main event, around 16 mph with gusts as high as 30 mph, and it blows dry through to the 6:03 sunset. Yesterday's storm took a lot of leaves down and today's wind goes after the rest. Every gust that comes through the crowns sends another handful across the lawn, so the ground in the frame changes through the day and the trees behind the feeder let a little more sky through by the hour. That matters to whatever is still working the treeline. A thinning canopy means less cover from above, and a hard cold wind on top of it tends to turn visits into short quick runs, out to the feeder and straight back to the nearest trunk rather than the long unhurried stops of a mild afternoon. The lulls are when to watch. When the roar in the crowns drops for a minute the frame often fills from two or three directions at once, as if everything had been waiting on the same cue. A digital window beats the real kind on a day like this, wide open to the sound of the wind and letting none of the cold in. Tonight is the bigger story, widespread frost after 8pm and a low near 28°F (-2°C) under a clear sky, and Sunday arrives sunny and close to still with a high near 52°F (11°C), the lawn likely pale until the sun reaches it.
