Cleveland's so-called “dead” Steel Valley never really died. Along the Cuyahoga River, blast furnaces still burn, a federal contamination designation still lingers, and part of a national park sits on land that spent decades being remediated after industrial dumping.
This video follows the hidden layers beneath the familiar river-fire story—from Cleveland Works and the 1952 photograph reused in 1969 to the Krejci Dump, the forgotten Hulett unloaders, Eliot Ness’s role in the 1937 Little Steel Strike, and the canal routes that once carried freedom seekers north. The deeper you go, the less this looks like an industrial graveyard and the more it looks like a place that never stopped changing.
