What does a technical superintendent actually do when something fails on board?
If you are a seafarer thinking about this shore job, this is the moment that defines the role.
You get a call. Something important has failed on board and the vessel needs help. What do you do first?
In this episode, I look back at the engine alarm on our LPG carrier approaching Houston, and how working through it calmly and step by step became the same way of thinking I used after moving ashore.
A technical superintendent is not someone sitting in the office telling the crew what to do. The job is to make sure the right technical decisions are made, and that the resources needed to fix the problem are arranged. That can mean:
• Understanding the fault
• Coordinating with the ship's team
• Arranging a specialist technician
• Sourcing a spare part
• Making sure every next step is followed through
▶ Next episode: The solution is clear, but the spare part is thousands of kilometres away. How do you get the right support to the ship when time matters?
🔔 Follow along, and share this with a seafarer who is thinking of moving ashore.
