The war between Shiva and his own son lasted a thousand years. A child born from Shiva's own body grew up among asuras, won a boon from Brahma that made him almost impossible to kill, and one day marched on Mount Mandar to take a woman his ministers had seen in a cave. She was Parvati. This is the story of Andhaka as the Shiva Purana tells it, from Parvati covering Shiva's eyes on a mountainside to a war that swallowed the gods. Shiva leaves Parvati for a thousand years to renew the Mahapashupata vow, and Veerak holds the cave through a siege the text counts in days and nights. Among the asuras Andhaka sends to the cave is one named Duryodhana, who shares his name with the Kaurava prince. Shukracharya's revival mantra, the Mritasanjivani, was itself Shiva's gift, won in Varanasi after thousands of years of worship at the Shukreshvar linga, and the same chapter foretells that Shiva will one day swallow him. The goddess who drinks Andhaka's blood in the Shiva Purana is Vishnu himself, and the text gives her no name; other tellings hand that role to Chamunda or to the Mothers. The spine of this video is the Shiva Purana, Rudra Samhita, Yuddha Khanda, chapters 42 to 50. The birth of the Vastu Purush from a drop of Shiva's sweat during this war comes from the Matsya Purana, chapter 252. The Kurma Purana also has the gods take women's forms to serve Parvati while Nandi guards the door, and there Bhairava impales Andhaka and dances with him on the trident. In the Matsya Purana, chapter 179, Shiva creates the Mothers to drink the blood, and the Mothers then turn on the worlds until Narasimha calms them. The Vamana Purana has Prahlad warn Andhaka outright and gives him the new name Bhringi, and the Harivamsh burns him to ash with no return. Andhaka had eyes for most of this story and still could not see what stood in front of him. The Shiva Purana does not answer that blindness with death. It gives him time, three thousand years of it. In the telling you grew up with, was Andhaka forgiven, or burned to ash? Katha Curious: ancient stories, curious questions, sources named.
