On the way Vinicius says he has met Lygia three times, and by the garden pool she drew a fish in the earth with a stick. Petronius does not know what it means. In the quiet house the two men meet the old general and his wife, and Petronius sees Lygia playing ball in the garden. Vinicius tells her that love makes us equal to the gods, but then the old general says he wants to move to his farm in Sicily. At the end the general's wife says that God rules the world, not Nero.
