A geostationary satellite is a type of satellite that orbits Earth at the same speed the Earth rotates.
That means it appears to stay over the same spot on the equator all the time.
It completes one orbit in 24 hours, exactly matching the Earth's rotation period.
The satellite orbits at a height of around 35,786 kilometers above Earth’s surface.
This specific height allows it to rotate at the same angular velocity as Earth.
Because of this, the satellite always looks stationary relative to a fixed point on Earth — that’s why it’s called “geo” (Earth) + stationary.
Uses of Geostationary Satellites
Used in communication (TV, internet, phone).
Used for weather forecasting and navigation.
Used for military surveillance and global broadcasting.
