A 74-year-old man thought a stranger had accidentally hit his car. He had no idea detectives were about to arrest him for a murder committed 45 years earlier.
In November 2018, police arrived at John Arthur Getreu's home in Hayward, California, using a fake car accident to lure him outside. What he didn't know was that investigators had already connected his DNA to the 1973 murder of Stanford graduate Leslie Perlov.
But this was only part of the story.
In 1963, Getreu had been convicted of killing a teenage girl in Germany. Years later, two young women — Leslie Perlov and Janet Taylor — were murdered near Stanford University. Their cases remained unsolved for decades.
Then forensic genetic genealogy, a discarded coffee cup, and a DNA match changed everything.
In this CASE SIGNAL true crime documentary, we examine the cold case investigation, the evidence, the police interrogation, and the extraordinary timeline that finally brought John Arthur Getreu to justice.

*What do you think?*
Could investigators have connected these cases earlier, or was modern DNA technology the only realistic way to uncover the truth?
