Its stirring music was composed by Alexander Vasilyevich Alexandrov and lyrics by Vasily Lebedev-Kumach, and it was first performed days after publication at Moscow’s Belorussky Railway Station, where it was reportedly sung repeatedly to departing soldiers. The song’s urgent words call on the vast Soviet “Motherland” to rise up in a “sacred war” against the fascist invaders, urging collective resistance and defence of the homeland; it became a powerful rallying cry and enduring symbol of Soviet determination during the war.
