Paper drinks sound. A room lined with books turns every echo into a hush.
Here, every candle is lit and every chair is empty.
On one desk the ink is still wet, and somewhere further in, a fire is still warm.
Ancient Library is a slow walk from the front door to the heart of a library no one remembers building. There is no time of day in here. The moon holds its place, and only the room around you changes. Five rooms, in order: The Outer Hall, The Long Stacks, The Scriptorium, The Inner Stacks, and The Reader's Room. Each doorway leads somewhere smaller. With every room there is less moonlight on the stone and more warmth: one lantern across the hall, a row of candles between the shelves, a candle on each desk, a single oil lamp behind glass, and at last the embers of a small hearth. Nobody is here, only signs of someone: a chair pushed back, a quill in the ink.
You can hear the rooms close in. Every track sits in a wooden space, and the reverb shortens as you go deeper, from a tall timber hall to a small study where the instruments feel close enough to touch. The voices are chamber instruments: felt piano with its hammers audible, viola da gamba, a muted string quartet, cor anglais, harp, and clarinet and bassoon in their low, warm registers, with a small harmonium at the end. A deep drone and a slow string pad lie beneath it all. There is no percussion, and nothing arrives suddenly. A clock ticks faintly in the scriptorium, where there is still work to do; by the reader's room it has stopped. Near the close, a clavichord plays one small melody. It is among the quietest keyboards ever made, meant for one listener in one small room. Many more takes were made than kept, each chosen by ear.
