Boros Devotion vs. Orzhov Midrange
This gameplay is from a Thursday Night Magic round between myself (left) versus my opponent, Matt Lee (right).
- - Boros Devotion Deck List - - -
4x Ash Zealot
4x Burning-Tree Emissary
4x Frostburn Weird
4x Boros Reckoner
4x Fanatic of Mogis
4x Stormbreath Dragon
2x Purphoros, God of the Forge
2x Mizzium Mortars
4x Chained to the Rocks
2x Boros Charm
2x Warleader's Helix
4x Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx
4x Sacred Foundry
4x Temple of Triumph
10x Mountain
2x Plains
Sideboard:
4x Skullcrack
2x Mizzium Mortars
2x Wear // Tear
2x Assemble the Legion
1x Hammer of Purphoros
2x Warleader's Helix
2x Boros Charm
Sideboarding Scheme for G2/G3:
G2 (on the draw) -
-2x Purphoros, God of the Forge
-2x Warleader's Helix
+2x Wear // Tear
+2x Skullcrack
Notes: Both Purphoros and Helix are actually okay in this match-up but are easily replaced when it comes to SB tech that allows us to be more reactive to our opponent's plays. Wear // Tear allows me to deal with Underworld Connections and Whip of Erebos (if they're playing it); both cards being a big problem if they're not dealt with. Skullcrack allows me to shut off any life-gain from cards like Gray Merchant, Obzedat, Blood Baron, and Whip of Erebos.
G3 (on the play) -
-2x Purphoros, God of the Forge
-2x Warleader's Helix
+4x Skullcrack
Notes: While we're on the play, we have the opportunity to be much more aggressive than Orzhov and we can force our opponent to have to play from far behind with even an average hand. I choose to side in more Skullcrack while on the play only because cards like Underworld Connections and Whip of Erebos are far worse when we already have an established board by turn 4. Our opponent will be more likely to leave mana open and play removal while behind than play either enchantment. If our opponent taps out for a card like Blood Baron or Gray Merchant, we can easily respond with Skullcrack to nullify an ETB ability or attack/block from Baron.
