Leros Military History

This is a short video showcasing the reach, WWII military history of the Greek island of Leros. The island's strategic location and its magnificent, natural harbour of Portolago (nowadays Lakki,) the largest natural harbour in the Mediterranean Sea, made it an ideal naval base. The heavy fortification of Leros and the construction of the large naval base, ensured Italian control of the Aegean, the Dardanelles and the Middle East. The Italian occupation of Leros ended on November 16th, 1943, when the island was surrented to the German forces who invaded the island.
