If he says to pay taxes to Caesar, he risks losing the support of the people. If he says not to pay, the Herodians have reason to report him to the authorities. Yet Jesus masterfully turns the trap back on them. Asking for a Roman denarius, he simply says, "Whose image and inscription is this?" His answer not only escapes their scheme, but exposes the real issue. Yes, give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, but give to God what belongs to God.
