THE MIGHTY NEIN 1x7 "Belonging" REACTION & REVIEW! | WHY ESSEK WHY!? | Critical Role Reaction

I HAVE A LOVE / HATE RELATIONSHIP WITH THIS EPISODE! The time has come for me to dive into The Mighty Nein Season 1 Episode 7, and WOW… this one is deeply emotional and incredibly heavy. After proving their worth, the Mighty Nein are given another dangerous assignment by The Gentleman — to steal a mysterious Kryn artifact, the Beacon. But conflicting motivations and personal choices send the Nein on separate paths throughout Zaadash, and watching the group fractured like this genuinely broke my heart. I’ve come to love them as a unit, so seeing them split up was really tough. The most devastating storyline, however, unfolds within the Kryn Dynasty, where Essek Thelyss, voiced by Matthew Mercer (Critical Role, The Legend of Vox Machina), makes a series of choices that completely shattered me. Essek is forced to kill his own mother — not as an act of betrayal, but as a final mercy to ease her suffering. That could NOT have been easy for him. That moment alone was emotionally brutal. But what follows is even worse: Essek frames Verrat, his close friend, as the one responsible for helping steal the Beacon, rather than taking the blame himself. Watching Essek choose self-preservation over loyalty was devastating and complicated, and it added so much depth to his character. Meanwhile, the Mighty Nein — Caleb Widogast (Liam O’Brien), Beauregard Lionett (Marisha Ray), Jester Lavorre (Laura Bailey), Fjord (Travis Willingham), Nott the Brave (Sam Riegel), and Mollymauk Tealeaf (Taliesin Jaffe) — each navigate their own threads of danger, secrecy, and internal conflict. The separation highlights just how fragile their trust still is, and how easily outside forces can pull them apart. I truly cannot wait for Yasha Nydoorin (Ashley Johnson) to finally become a part of them. Even so, the episode is packed with tension, political intrigue, and quiet character moments that deepen every arc. This chapter leans hard into themes of grief, loyalty, guilt, and the cost of survival, and it proves once again that The Mighty Nein is just as emotionally powerful as it is action-packed. The animation, music, and performances elevate every scene, making this one of the most impactful episodes of the season so far — even if it left my heart in pieces.
